Everything you need to know about vivid colours

Did you know that it’s never been easier to add bold and vivid colours to your hair?

Your bright colour options are endless thanks partly to the introduction of products like Olaplex which is designed to maintain and protect the integrity of bleached or coloured hair.

You can choose from any colour of the rainbow, or even try all of them at once! You can colour all of your hair, or just add a few stand-out highlights. If you’re after something more subtle you can always go for lighter tones of peach, rose and lilac.

However, there are a few things you should consider before making the vivid colour leap.

How bold can you be?

Not everyone feels comfortable or is able to have brightly coloured hair, like the mermaid green colour below, in their job or workplace.

You may want to choose where and when you want to show off your bold colours.

In this case, you may wish to colour hidden sections of your hair that are nestled under your natural hair colour. This gives you the best of both worlds, where you can go from a more conservative look to exciting colour by sweeping your hair up.

If you want to go for something a little more daring, without the all-over colour commitment, then you could try colorful ombré or balayage layers. You can also introduce some pops of colour with a few section highlights, or colour on the ends as seen below.

Flatter yourself

The saying ‘don’t flatter yourself’ should never apply when it comes to choosing colour. It’s great to have your heart set on a specific bright colour, but you should consider how it will look with your colouring.

Depending on your complexion, eye colour and natural hair colour, you may wish to consider a different shade or tone. Generally, cooler colours flatter cooler complexions and warmer colours suit warmer complexions.

If you’re not sure what colour choice is best for you, speak to a qualified hair colourist you trust.

Commit to it

Choosing a non-conventional hair colour requires a commitment to ensure your colour looks its best and any damage to your hair is minimised.

Speak to your hair colourist about your vivid colour options and what to expect in terms of fading. Some colours and products will be more permanent and re-growth will be more obvious. While others will wash out over time. Are you prepared for regularly-scheduled retouches, or the different stages of fading?

The more vibrant your colour the more susceptible your hair is to damage. This is especially the case if your hair is bleached first to accommodate the bold colour.

It’s important to speak to your colourist about in-salon treatments and products you can use as part of a hair care routine at home.
