Everyday Habits You May Be Doing that Are Wrecking Your Hair

Most of us want great looking hair but often overlook something very important to achieve that – hair health.

While many things such as the environment, stress and diet can impact your hair health, there are everyday habits many of us are guilty of when it comes to our hair.

Brushing Wet Hair

Hair strands are prone to damage when they are wet and you should avoid brushing your hair right after a shower or swimming. Brushing wet hair can result in breakage or hair loss, due to the pulling on the hair shaft.

It’s best to just give your wet hair a gently comb through with a wide tooth comb to minimise damage.

Using Too Much Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo may be one of the best inventions when it comes to managing your hair between washes. However, overusing it can block scalp pores, as well as make your hair dull and weak.

Dry shampoo products can also attract dirt and weigh down your hair further. You should aim to use these products sparingly, or wash your hair reasonably soon after their use.

Hot Showers

Who doesn't love a hot shower?

Very hot water though can dehydrate hair stripping the scalp of natural oils. If your hair strands become overly brittle and dry this can result in hair breakage and loss.

Towel Drying

We bet you didn’t know this one. Being too rough with your towels when drying your hair can also lead to poor hair health.

When you rub your hair with a towel you can rough up the outer layer of the hair, creating frizz, as well potential damage to the hair shaft.

It’s better to use a super-absorbent towel or be careful to pat your hair dry more gently.

Blow Drying

There’s nothing wrong with blow drying your hair, as long as you follow a few guidelines. You don’t want to dry your hair when it’s very wet. You should wait until it’s at least 50-60 percent dry before cranking up the hair dryer.

You should let it air dry first as much as possible.

You also probably should avoid blow drying your hair excessively because every time you use a hair dryer you are removing moisture from your hair. This is exacerbated by the brushing or combing movement used when blow drying.

Flat Irons/Curling Irons

Similar to using hair dryers, you probably shouldn’t overuse other heating appliances such as flat or curling irons.

Ironing dry hair can cause cracks along the hair shaft leading to hair damage, while ironing wet hair can create little steam explosions, drawing the moisture from your hair and creating breakage and split ends

It’s always a good idea to use a heat protector hair product in conjunction with any heating appliances.
