Balayage Hair: What’s All the Fuss About?

Balayage Hair: What’s All the Fuss About?

There are some hair trends that tend to stick around and balayage is one such trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon.

But what’s all the fuss about when it comes to balayage? And is it a good option for you?

At B Hair we are balayage experts and are ready to give you the lowdown on this colour technique.

What is Balayage?

Balayage is a French word meaning ‘to sweep’ or ‘to paint’. This hair colouring technique is applied by hand and gently graduates colour from darker roots to lighter tones towards the ends. It creates a soft sun-kissed look that we all love.

Think of it as an attempt to recreate the natural lightening of your hair by the sun. Depending on the look you want to achieve your colourist can start off the highlights a few inches from the root of your hair or further up.

Why Balayage?

Balayage is sought after by women all over the world. From celebrities on the red carpet to everyday women of all ages, and is an easy way to freshen your look. It also has some other major benefits:

Low Maintenance

Balayage grows out beautifully, creating not-so-obvious regrowth lines. With Balayage you can wait longer between hair colouring appointments. And using high-quality products that contain colour protection components will keep your balayage hair looking fabulous between visits to your hairdresser.

Customised to suit you

Balayage hair ensures you can have a highly individualised look. Before getting balayage, speak to your hairdresser to explore your colour options. You can choose colours closest to your natural tones, that best match your hair cut, skin tone and facial features, or you can go for a bolder look. You have complete control over what colour to use and where it is placed.

Reduces Salon time

Balayage works well for the modern woman who has less time on her hands. The application process takes less time than other colour options. Since balayage grows out naturally, you get longer out of each application.

Suits Everyone

Balayage can be applied to the hair of varying lengths and textures and colours, though it does work best on long hair or medium length hair. Balayage adds depth and dimension to hair, which gives the impression of volume, an important factor for those with fine hair.

What’s the difference between Balayage and Ombre?

You may have also heard of ombre and wondered what the difference was compared to balayage. While balayage means to sweep, ombre means shadow.

So with balayage, the colourist sweeps colour through sections of your hair in order to give your hair highlights that are a couple of shades lighter than the natural colour of your hair. The key part is to create a ‘natural’ looking lightening effect.

Ombre though means creating a more dramatic two-toned look with a dark shade at the root and a lighter shade at the ends. You can use almost any colour of the rainbow when creating an ombre look.
